unseen oceans
2018 exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This exhibit opened in March 2018, and brought to life many invisible phenomena that occur in the oceans. My contribution was to sculpt four species of biofluorescent fish, including the False Stonefish, Diamond Lizardfish, Black-tip Sole and Warteye Stargazer. These modes were sculpted to a high degree of detail, then painted with fluorescent colors to simulate the unique glow they exhibit under certain conditions in the ocean.
Over 200 individual models were made of about two dozen species. The swirling funnel of neon fish was lovingly dubbed “fishnado,” a name that found its way into several promotional articles about the exhibit. The exhibit is currently traveling, appearing at museums around the US.
